Jaguar - Jaguar (English spelling)

It is a member of the order Carnivora and family Felidae. It is also called the American leopard or the American tiger, and lives in the dense forests near rivers and swamps from the southwestern United States through Central America to northern Argentina. Its body length is 1.1 to 1.8 meters, its tail length is 45 to 75 centimeters, and it weighs 70 to 150 kilograms. It can be black or white, but usually its base color is yellow and its underside is white. It has black spots similar to those of a leopard, but these are larger and have small black spots inside. It lives alone, is mainly nocturnal, and is good at swimming and climbing trees. It does not live in arid areas, but hunts small rodents, agoutis, capybaras, sloths, monkeys, tapirs, peccaries, deer, birds, crocodiles, turtles and their eggs, frogs, fish, etc. near water. It creates a fixed territory, which is 5 to 25 kilometers in diameter where food is abundant. Those living in the northern part of the range have a gestation period of 93 to 110 days and give birth to 2 to 4 babies in January, but those living in tropical regions give birth at various times. The babies stay with the mother for 2 years and reach sexual maturity at 3 years old. They can live for about 22 years in captivity.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱食肉目ネコ科の動物。アメリカヒョウ、アメリカトラともいい、アメリカ合衆国南西部から中央アメリカを経てアルゼンチン北部までの川や沼地の近くの密林に生息する。体長1.1～1.8メートル、尾長45～75センチメートル、体重70～150キログラム。体が黒色あるいは白色のものもあるが、普通、地色は黄色で腹面は白い。ヒョウに似た黒斑(こくはん)があるが、斑紋は大きく、中に小さな黒点がある。単独で生活し、おもに夜行性で、泳ぎや木登りがうまい。乾燥地帯にはすまず、水辺で小形齧歯(げっし)類、アグーチ、カピバラ、ナマケモノ、サル、バク、ペッカリー、シカ、鳥、ワニ、カメとその卵、カエル、魚などを捕食する。一定の縄張り（テリトリー）をつくり、食物が豊富な所ではそれは直径5～25キロメートルである。分布の北にすむものは妊娠期間93～110日で、1月に2～4子を産むが、熱帯地方のものの出産時期は一定していない。子は2年間雌親と過ごし、3歳で性成熟する。寿命は飼育下で22年ほどである。
