An island in the Sumo Nada Sea in the southern part of Nagasaki Prefecture. It belongs to Nagasaki City. Its area is 1.06 square kilometers. The Ikeshima Coal Mine was opened in 1952 (Showa 27) when coalfields were closing one after another, and by 1960 it was growing at a steady pace, with 1,800 employees and a monthly coal production of 100,000 tons. Before the mine opened, it was a semi-agricultural, semi-fishing village with 80 houses, but high-rise apartment buildings were built, forming a densely populated area on the small island. However, the mine closed in 2001 (Heisei 13), and measures to deal with the area after the mine closure are an issue. Seawater is desalinated using a vacuum distillation device and is supplied to residents free of charge for drinking water. Ikeshima Port is an artificial port created by excavating Kagamiike Pond, and 1.2 million tons of coal are shipped there annually. Regular ships come and go from the ports of Konoura (Nagasaki City), Oseto (Saikai City), and Sasebo. The Ikeshima coal mine ruins are now an experiential tourist spot. Population: 345 (2009).
