Basidiomycete, order Matsutake, family Cardinalaceae. In autumn, it grows in colonies or solitary on the ground under forests. The cap is 5-10 cm in diameter, with a stalk 1-2 cm thick and 4-9 cm tall. The surface is hairless and sticky, and when young it is brownish purple or purple, fading relatively quickly to clay-colored or brown spots, but the purple color remains on the edges. The spore print is rust-colored. It is edible. It is distributed in Hokkaido, Honshu, and Kyushu, and is also found in Europe and North America.
