A general term for the genus Coelogyne in the family Orchidaceae. Approximately 140 species are found in a wide area, from the highlands of northern India to Southeast Asia, New Guinea, and Fiji. They grow on trees or rocks. They have broad leaves and flower stalks that grow from pseudobulbs at the terminal end. The flower stalks bear one to many flowers, many of which hang down in a flexible manner. The flower colors are not flashy, such as white, green, and brown, but they have a subdued beauty. They prefer partial shade in well-ventilated areas. They should be planted in clay pots or wooden baskets covered with sphagnum moss and hung up. Water them thoroughly during the growing season from spring to autumn. In winter, water sparingly and keep the temperature above 10°C.
