An old town in Tome County, northeastern Miyagi Prefecture. Most of the town is in the Kitakami Highlands, and in addition to rice, it also produces forest products such as shiitake mushrooms and maitake mushrooms. Apples are grown along the Kitakami River. Maiya on the Kitakami Riverbank was a river port during the feudal era, and was home to a blacksmith's house where military equipment was made. In April 2005, it merged with Sako Town, Tome Town, Nakata Town, Toyosato Town, Yoneyama Town, Ishigoe Town, and Minamikata Town in Tome County, and Tsuyama Town in Motoyoshi County, to become a city, Tome City. 140.90 km2 . Population: 8,582 (2003).

A former town in Adachi County in central-eastern Fukushima Prefecture. Most of the town is in the Abukuma Highlands, with little flat land. Harimichi, the town in the center, developed as a market town, and the raw silk market was a thriving business. The town is primarily involved in rice farming, livestock farming, fruit and tobacco cultivation, and sericulture. There is a large cedar tree (a natural monument) in the grounds of Okitsushima Shrine on Mt. Kowata. In December 2005, it was incorporated into Iwashiro Town, Adachi Town, and Nihonmatsu City in Adachi County. 72.22 km2 . Population: 8,440 (2003).

A former town occupying the eastern part of Oshima, Oshima District, Yamaguchi Prefecture. There are many fishing villages on the coast and on the surrounding small islands such as Jojima and Okikamurojima. In addition to citrus cultivation on the mountain slopes, sea bream and oyster farming is thriving. There is a swimming beach. In October 2004, it merged with Hisaka Town, Oshima Town, and Tachibana Town in Oshima District to form Suo-Oshima Town. 38.78 km2 . 5,291 people (2003).

A former town in Waga County, central Iwate Prefecture. The Kamaishi Line runs through the town. The Sarugaishi River flows through the town, and the area is hilly. Rice is the main crop. Tsuchizawa, located in the center of the town, was a former castle town and a post town on the Kamaishi Kaido road. Tase Dam is located in the southeast. Area: 157.51 km2 . In January 2006, it was incorporated into Hanamaki City along with Ishidoritani Town and Osako Town in Hienuki County. Population: 10,709 (2003).

福島県中東部,安達郡の旧町。大部分が阿武隈(あぶくま)高地で平地は少ない。中心の針道(はりみち)は市場町として発達し,生糸市が盛んであった。米作,畜産,果樹・葉タバコの栽培,養蚕を主体としている。木幡(こわた)山の隠津島(おきつしま)神社境内に大杉(天然記念物)がある。2005年12月安達郡岩代町,安達町と二本松市へ編入。72.22km2。8440人(2003)。

山口県大島郡,大島東部を占める旧町。海岸と,情島や沖家室(おきかむろ)島など周辺の小島には漁村が多い。山地斜面での柑橘(かんきつ)類の栽培のほか,タイ・カキの養殖が盛ん。海水浴場がある。2004年10月大島郡久賀町,大島町,橘町と合併し,周防大島町となる。38.78km2。5291人(2003)。

岩手県中部,和賀郡の旧町。釜石線が通じる。猿ヶ石川が流れ,丘陵地が広い。米作を主とする。中心の土沢は旧城下町で,釜石街道の宿場町でもあった。南東部に田瀬ダムがある。157.51km2。2006年1月稗貫郡石鳥谷町,大迫町と花巻市へ編入。1万709人(2003)。
