Japanese: ボンテンカ - ぼんてんか

A clump-like deciduous shrub of the Malvaceae family. It grows to a height of about 1m and has alternate leaves. The leaves have long petioles several centimeters long, and the leaf blades are circular to broadly ovate, deeply palmately lobed, and covered with stellate hairs, but the undersides are densely packed. In summer, short stalks emerge from the leaf axils and produce crimson-tinged flowers. The flowers have five petals and are about 2cm in diameter. The fruits are obovate, less than 1cm long, and covered with small thorns that allow them to stick to animals or clothing. Aramina lobata L. (English name: Aramina fibre, Congo jute) is used to distinguish between large plants with shallowly lobed leaves and small plants with long stems and deeply lobed leaves.
