A haiku poet from the mid-Edo period. Hori clan. Commonly known as Ikedaya Chozaemon. His first pen names were Kayu and Kayu. His other pen names included Choan and Boryusha. He was from Kanazawa in Kaga Province (Ishikawa Prefecture). His family home was a storehouse in Tatemachi, Kanazawa. He initially belonged to the Mino school of Shiko and later to the Ise school of Mugibayashi and Muginami. However, he later found the style of Shiko to be vulgar and shallow, and admired the lofty spirit of "Minashiguri." He promoted something called the "Teikyo Shofu" style, making a major contribution to the reform movement of haiku during the Tenmei Restoration. His books include "Uzuradachi", "Haiku Mougyu", "Teikyo Seifu Kukaidensho", "Yamanchu Yawa", "Shomon Ichiyaka Kuju", and "Shinkyokuri". He was a man of many talents, and was also skilled in shogi, tea ceremony, and appraisal of calligraphy, paintings, and antiques. He also wrote many historical novels and miscellaneous books, such as "Keicho Chugaiden", "Kan'ei Nantohen", and "Keian Taiheiki".

江戸中期の俳人。堀氏。通称池田屋長左衛門。初号は葭由(かゆう)、可遊。別号に樗庵(ちょあん)、暮柳舎(ぼりゅうしゃ)など。加賀国（石川県）金沢の人。生家は金沢竪町(たてまち)の蔵宿。俳諧(はいかい)は初め支考(しこう)門の美濃(みの)派に、中ごろ麦林・麦浪の伊勢(いせ)派に属した。しかし、のち支麦の風調の卑俗浅陋(せんろう)なることに気づき、『虚栗(みなしぐり)』の気概高致なるところにあこがれ、「貞享蕉風(じょうきょうしょうふう)」なるものを喧伝(けんでん)、天明(てんめい)中興俳諧の革新運動に大きく寄与した。著書に『鶉立(うずらだち)』『俳諧蒙求(もうぎゅう)』『貞享正風句解伝書』『山中夜話』『蕉門一夜口授』『新虚栗』など。多芸の人で、将棋、茶道、書画骨董(こっとう)の鑑定にもたけていた。また『慶長中外伝』『寛永南島変』『慶安太平記』などの稗史(はいし)小説や雑書も多い。
