An insect of the Nymphalidae family of the Lepidoptera order (illustration). It is found in the tropics of East Asia from India eastward, with the northern limit of its distribution being the northern part of Okinawa Island. It is found locally in Okinawa, but is not uncommon on Ishigaki Island and Iriomote Island. It has a unique vertically long wing shape, and a tail-like protrusion on the hind wings, but the position and structure are different from those of the swallowtail butterfly. It is large, with a spread of about 6.5 cm, and becomes wider toward the center. The upper surface is black, orange, and indigo, with two translucent white stripes on each of the forewings. The underside resembles a dead leaf, but is highly variable, and like the shells of the clam, no two have the same pattern. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
