A general term for insects in the superfamily Cicadelloidea in the order Hemiptera. When it comes to pests, planthoppers and leafhoppers are often referred to as one of the most common insect groups that damage agricultural crops. They are called leafhoppers because they crawl sideways, but they can also jump with their hind legs and are skilled at flying using their wings, with many species arriving at lights at night. Over 4,000 species are known worldwide. Most species are small, with body lengths of around 3 to 5 mm, and even the largest species are few, with only a few exceeding 10 mm.
