Fatḥ 'Alī Shāh
1771‐1834
The second Shah of the Qajar dynasty of Iran. Reigned 1797-1834. Nephew of the first Shah, Aqajar Muhammad. During his rule, he was forced to make concessions in the face of conflicts of international interest between the great European powers. He concluded the Finkenstein Treaty (1807) with Napoleon, who had ambitions of conquering India, and the Anglo-Iranian Treaty (1814) with Britain, which tried to thwart Napoleon's plans. He also lost territory in the Caucasus region in two wars with Russia (1804-12, 1805-26-27).
