Hungarian politician. Active in the Austro-Hungarian parliament as a radical democrat. Taking advantage of the March Revolution of 1848, he forced the central government to recognize Hungary's autonomy, organized an army, and declared independence in April 1849. He became the head of a provisional government, but was soon defeated by the Russian army and went into exile, traveling to Turkey and the United States and Britain. In London, he formed a friendship with the Italian Mazzini. In 1862, he proposed the idea of a Danube Federation of Hungary and neighboring nations.
