教育制度のうち学校に関する制度。近代の教育は学校を中心として発達したため，学校制度は教育制度の主要な部分を占めている。学校制度は段階的には初等教育制度，中等教育制度，高等教育制度に区分され，また学校種別により，小学校制度，中学校制度などに分けられる。内容のうえからは，教育課程の制度，教科書の制度，教員に関する制度，教育施設・設備に関する制度などとなる。現在の学校制度は学校教育法を基本とし，多くの関係法規によって規定されている。近代の学校制度は国家の管理運営のもとにおかれ，教育法規に基づいて成立している。しかし他方からみれば，社会の伝統と教育観を基盤として成立し，ある程度持続性をもった教育に関する組織である。したがって学校制度は単なる教育法規の体系ではなく，社会的，歴史的基盤のうえに成立しているものである。 (→学校体系 )
