A perennial plant of the Lamiaceae family, it is widely distributed in the warm temperate zone of southeastern Asia and grows under forests in hilly areas throughout Japan except Hokkaido. It has short creeping rhizomes and erect stems that are densely covered with white hairs. It has heart-shaped, stalk-shaped leaves that are 1-2.5 cm in diameter and grow opposite each other. In early summer, it produces a long flower spike at the top of the stem, with purple lip-shaped flowers arranged in two rows that open facing one way. It is said that this Japanese name comes from the resemblance of the flowers to foaming waves.
