Quinhydrone

Japanese: キンヒドロン

A general term for a compound consisting of one quinone molecule and one hydroquinone molecule. It generally exists in the form of a crystal, and when dissolved in water, it dissociates into quinone and hydroquinone. Its structure is thought to be a molecular compound formed by hydrogen bonding between quinone and hydroquinone. In the narrow sense, it refers to a molecular compound consisting of benzoquinone and hydroquinone. It is a green (reddish brown in transmitted light) crystal with a metallic luster, with a melting point of 171°C. It is sparingly soluble in water and soluble in ethanol. It has been used in electrodes for measuring hydrogen ion concentration, but is somewhat chemically unstable and is not used much these days. It is obtained by the mild oxidation of hydroquinone. キノン１分子とヒドロキノン１分子からなる化合物の総称。一般に結晶の形で存在し，水などに溶かすとキノンとヒドロキノンとに解離する。構造はキノンとヒドロキノンとの水素結合による分子化合物と考えられている。狭義にはベンゾキノンとヒドロキノンからなる分子化合物をいう。これは緑色（透過光では赤褐色）の金属光沢のある結晶で，融点171℃。水に難溶，エタノールに可溶。水素イオン濃度測定用の電極に使われてきたが，化学的にやや不安定で現在はあまり使われていない。ヒドロキノンの穏やかな酸化により得られる。（図）
