A general term for a compound consisting of one quinone molecule and one hydroquinone molecule. It generally exists in the form of a crystal, and when dissolved in water, it dissociates into quinone and hydroquinone. Its structure is thought to be a molecular compound formed by hydrogen bonding between quinone and hydroquinone. In the narrow sense, it refers to a molecular compound consisting of benzoquinone and hydroquinone. It is a green (reddish brown in transmitted light) crystal with a metallic luster, with a melting point of 171°C. It is sparingly soluble in water and soluble in ethanol. It has been used in electrodes for measuring hydrogen ion concentration, but is somewhat chemically unstable and is not used much these days. It is obtained by the mild oxidation of hydroquinone.
