〘Noun〙① Under the Ritsuryo system, the second of the four ranks of official. Below the Chief Justice (kami) and above the Magistrate (jo) . Assists the Chief Justice and also acts as his deputy. The character for "suke" differs depending on the office. Time. ※Shoki (720), August, 1st year of the Taika era (Kitano Honin) "The Chief Justice (kami) had nine attendants. The Vice Minister (suke) had seven attendants." [Wamyosho, 20 volumes (around 934)]② An official position established by the new Meiji government between February 1868 ( 1868 ) and November 1869 (1866), which refers to the deputy chief of each office. The characters differ depending on the office. [Additional notes] The following characters are assigned depending on the office, or the position corresponds to it. In the Jingikan, it is Vice, Chunagon, and Sangi in the Daijokan. The following were the ranks: Suke (Ministry), Ryo (Bo/Office), Suke (Ryo), Sa (Efu), Dai/Shoni (Dazaifu), Suke (Kuni), Shoryo (Gun), etc. There were different ranks depending on the government office, and the equivalent ranks of each differed.

〘名〙 (古くは「しかん」とも)① 官職で、長官に次ぐもの。※西国立志編(1870‐71)〈中村正直訳〉一「加比丹(カビテイン)の次官なる人」② 令制で、長官(かみ)・次官(すけ)・判官(じょう)・主典(さかん)の四等官のうちの第二位の官職。〔色葉字類抄(1177‐81)〕③ 各省および国務大臣が長となる庁に置かれる大臣の補佐機関。省務・庁務を整理し各部局の事務を監督する。事務次官。※花間鶯(1887‐88)〈末広鉄腸〉下「高山某と云ふ或る省の次官は」
