Ishiyama Honganji Temple

Ishiyama Honganji Temple

This is a Jodo Shinshu temple located in Osaka, Settsu (Osaka Prefecture). It was originally built in 1496 (Meio 5) by Rennyo, the 8th abbot of Hongan-ji, as a branch temple of Yamashina Hongan-ji. In 1532 (Tenbun 1), Yamashina Hongan-ji was burned down by Rokkaku Sadayori and his followers of the Lotus Sutra, so Shonyo, the head priest at the time, moved here and established Hongan-ji. The temple's former location is currently the Honmaru (main citadel) of Osaka Castle. As this area was a strategic location surrounded by rivers on all sides, Oda Nobunaga wanted to use it as a base for his advance into China, and in 1570 (Genki 1) requested that Hongan-ji be moved elsewhere. However, the 11th head priest of Hongan-ji, Kennyo, refused, and for the next 11 years until 1580 (Tensho 8), he rallied followers from various provinces and continued fighting with the feudal lords who were competing with Nobunaga for supremacy. This is called the Ishiyama War or Ishiyama Hongan-ji Rebellion. In the end, the battle was not to Hongan-ji's advantage, and a peace agreement was reached by imperial decree of Emperor Ogimachi, with Kennyo retreating to Saginomori in Kii Province (Wakayama Prefecture) and leaving the temple site to Nobunaga, and Ishiyama Hongan-ji was abolished.
