Awaai

Japanese:
Awaai

A dyestuff that was a specialty of the Awa Tokushima Domain during the Edo period. Indigo, along with safflower, was said to be the leading dye, but it is said that full-scale cultivation of indigo began in Awa (Tokushima Prefecture) in 1585 (Tensho 13), when Hachisuka Iemasa entered the domain and introduced seeds and techniques from his former territory of Banshu (Hyogo Prefecture), protecting and encouraging its cultivation. In 1625 (Kan'ei 2), the domain's Indigo Office was established, and it began to protect and control indigo, but in 1733 (Kyoho 18), the Indigo Magistrate's Office was established to strengthen the monopoly on indigo leaves. According to a survey conducted in 1800 (Kansei 12), the cultivated area was 1,600 chobu, and the indigo dye production was 179,000 bales. The main production areas were in the lower reaches of the Yoshino River, spanning the counties of Myodo, Myozai, Itano, Awa, and Oe, and the industry supported the finances of the domain by almost monopolizing the national market. However, at the end of the 19th century, the industry rapidly declined due to the large-scale import of chemical dyes from Germany.
