An archipelago stretching from north to south in the Yellow Sea, off the southwestern tip of the Korean Peninsula. There are 52 islands in total, 14 inhabited and 38 uninhabited. The majority of the population is concentrated on Daikokusan Island, which has an area of 18 km2, and most of the residents make a living partly by farming and partly by fishing. As of 1980, the total population of the islands was 9,861, but this is rapidly decreasing and the islands are becoming increasingly deserted. The surrounding areas are fishing grounds for hairtail and sardines, and seaweed farming is also carried out. The islands are known as a producer of silica sand.
