Hisao Arakida
Year of death: Bunka 1.8.14 (1804.9.17)
Year of birth: Enkyo 3.11.21 (1747.1.1)
A Japanese scholar and poet of the mid-Edo period. His real surname was Watarai. His first name was Masayasu. He was known by the names Shuzo, Shudono, and Sai. His pen name was Isokien. He was adopted by Arakida Kuyo and appointed as the deputy chief priest of the Ise Inner Shrine. He was ranked as a junior fourth rank. In 1765, he went down to Edo and became a disciple of Kamo no Mabuchi, and was led to achieve great things by studying the songs in the Nihon Shoki and the Manyoshu. His representative works in this field are Nihon Shoki Kakai Tsukino Ochiha and Manyo Ko Tsukino Ochiha. Kuyo did not stay in one place, but expanded his sphere of activity by traveling to Yamato, Kawachi, and Shinano in search of ancient ruins and by forming friendships with Japanese scholars in Kyoto and Osaka. Due to his character, he was blessed with many friends and disciples, but he was inferior to Motoori Norinaga and others in terms of the precision of his arguments. However, many of his ambitious works are noteworthy. His family anthology includes the "Tsuki Ochiba Collection of Poems."
