… In the 1730s, music began to be directly imported from Western Europe to the Russian court. Starting with the Italian composer Francesco Araja (1709-70?), who had been in Russia for many years since 1735, leading Italian composers such as Baldassare Galuppi (1706-85), Tommaso Traetta (1727-79), Paisiello, Giuseppe Sarti (1729-1802), and Cimarosa stayed in St. Petersburg as the court conductor of Catherine the Great (reigned 1762-96). Many musicians from Italy and other Western countries were employed to perform at the Russian court and under the Russian nobility, and to teach Russian musicians. …
