A tree of the genus Chrysobalanus, family Chrysobalanaceae, closely related to the Rosaceae family, of which several species are known in the Americas and tropical West Africa (illustration). The leaves are simple and the flowers somewhat symmetrical, but they resemble apricots, and the fruit is edible. Chrysobalanus icaco L. (English name coco plum) is a shrub about 1 to 2 meters tall, native to Florida and the West Indies, but has been introduced to India and Malaysia, where the fruit is edible. However, it has no fragrance and is said to be not very tasty. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
