Japanese: キキョウラン - ききょうらん

A perennial plant of the lily family that grows wild in Japan on the southwestern coasts of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, as well as on the Okinawa Islands (illustration). The stem is 60-80 cm tall and grows in a panicle at the top. The leaves are gathered at the base and grow alternately in two rows, with flattened bases that overlap. The leaf blade is linear, about 50 cm long, and hard. It flowers from July to August. The tepals are pale purple, contrasting vividly with the yellow anthers. The filaments are bent in an S shape and swollen at the top. The anthers have the unique property of not dehiscing, but instead releasing pollen from a hole at the top.

日本では本州，四国，九州の南西部の海岸地帯と沖縄諸島に野生するユリ科の多年草（イラスト）。茎は高さ60～80cmで，上部は円錐花序となる。葉は根もとに集まり2列互生し，基部は扁平で重なり合う。葉身は線形で，長さ50cm程度，質はかたい。花期は7～8月。花被片は淡紫色で，黄色の葯とのコントラストは鮮やかである。花糸はS字形に曲がり，上部は肥大する。葯は裂開せず，頂部の孔から花粉を出すという特殊な性質をもっている。
