A commercial city in the northern tip of Tamil Nadu, southeastern India. Population 175,000 (1991). Located at the mouth of the Palar River, where it crosses the Javadi Hills in the Eastern Ghats and flows into the coastal plain, it occupies a strategic location on the transportation route connecting Madras with Bangalore on the Deccan Plateau. Sandalwood and tannery (bark for leather tanning) are collected from the mountains, and rice, groundnuts, sugarcane, and cotton are collected from the eastern plains. There is a 14th-century Vijayanagar Empire fort surrounded by a moat, and the Shiva temple inside is famous as a typical example of Dravidian architecture. インド南東部,タミル・ナードゥ州北端部の商業都市。人口17万5000(1991)。東ガーツ山脈に属するジャバーディ丘陵を横断してパーラール川が海岸平野に出る谷口部に位置し,マドラスとデカン高原上のバンガロールとを結ぶ交通路上の要地を占める。山地部からの白檀,タン皮(皮なめし用樹皮)など,また東の平野部からの米,ラッカセイ,サトウキビ,綿花を集散する。濠に囲まれた14世紀のビジャヤナガル王国期の城塞があり,その内部のシバ寺院はドラビダ様式の典型例として著名。
