A mining city in Lower Saxony in north-central Germany. Population 44,300 (2000). Located at the northern foot of the Harz Mountains, lead, copper, zinc, silver, and gold have been mined, refined, and processed here since the 10th century. However, it is now famous as a historical city, and the city's medieval urban features remain, including medieval palaces, Romanesque and Gothic churches, town halls, half-timbered houses with slate roofs and walls, castle walls, and towers. It is also a base for tourists visiting the Harz Mountains. [Saito Mitsunori] World Heritage RegistrationThe Rammelsberg mines in the Harz Mountains, the city of Goslar with its many historical buildings, and its complex Upper Harz Irrigation System were registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 1992, 2008, and 2010 as ``The Rammelsberg Mines, Historic Town of Goslar and the Upper Harz Irrigation System'' (World Cultural Heritage).
