... Muslim rule of the peninsula began in the early 8th century. In the western part of the peninsula, the area north of the Douro River was quickly cleared of Muslim influence, but in this area, after hundreds of years of linguistic change, Galician-Portuguese was established around the 9th century. This language spread southward with the Reconquista movement, coming into contact with Mozarabic (a Romance language used by Christians under Islamic rule), absorbing it and developing its own unique characteristics, eventually forming the common language unique to the Kingdom of Portugal (established in 1143). ...
