Montevideo (English spelling)

Montevideo (English spelling)
The capital of Uruguay. It is the capital of Montevideo Department and a port city located on the north bank of the Río de la Plata, a large delta estuary that flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Although the winters are somewhat windy, the climate is generally warm, with average temperatures ranging from 10 to 13°C even in the coldest months of June to September, and 22.5°C in January, the warmest month. The annual precipitation is about 1000mm, with rainfall being roughly even throughout the year. The city was built in 1726 by the Spaniards of Buenos Aires to stop the Portuguese from Brazil from moving south, and developed as a military base in the early colonial period. It later became a thriving commercial center, and the city's merchants played an important role at the time of Uruguay's independence, and it became the capital of Uruguay in 1828. The city's economy fluctuated greatly during the turbulent period before and after independence, but after the 1870s, with the construction of the railway and the development of the inland hinterland, it began to develop as a shipping port, and in the 20th century it developed rapidly, becoming one of the major cities in South America. It is the largest and only major city in Uruguay, and the majority of the country's activities in all sectors are concentrated here. There are large wool and meat processing plants, and the production of consumer goods such as textiles, shoes, soap, and clothing is thriving. The port once required barge loading and unloading. With the completion of modern port facilities, it is a major port on the Rio de la Plata along with the port of Buenos Aires, and handles most of Uruguay's foreign trade, shipping wool, meat, leather, grain, etc. Cultural facilities include the country's only comprehensive university, La República University (1849), various theaters, museums, and libraries. The city spreads out to the east and north from the old town, which occupies a low promontory surrounding the horseshoe-shaped Montevideo Bay. Although the old town still retains some colonial features, the city is generally modern, with high-rise buildings lining the wide streets. Roads and railways from all over the country converge in the city, and there is an international airport in Carrasco, on the eastern outskirts. It is the headquarters of the Union of Latin American Integration. Population: 1,633,000 (2009 estimate).
