Arakawa Floodway - Arakawa Floodway

Japanese:
Arakawa Floodway - Arakawa Floodway

A detour waterway built to regulate the water volume of the Arakawa River, which flows through Saitama Prefecture and the eastern part of Tokyo, and to protect Tokyo's downtown from flooding. It separates from the old main stream, the Sumida River, at Iwabuchi Watergate in Kita Ward, Tokyo. The river passes through Adachi, Katsushika, Edogawa, and other wards, and flows into Tokyo Bay in parallel with the Ayase River and Nakagawa River downstream. The River Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism calls the Arakawa Floodway the Arakawa River, and the old Arakawa River flowing south from the Iwabuchi Watergate the Sumida River. Planned by the Ministry of Home Affairs after the great flood of 1910 (Meiji 43), construction began in 1911, and was completed in 1930 (Showa 5). It is 24 kilometers long and 450-580 meters wide. The highest water level recorded was during Typhoon Kathleen in 1947 (Showa 22), when the water almost reached the nine-meter levee, but flooding was averted. Since then, this spillway has been effective in preventing flooding in the downtown area of Tokyo.

This water gate is located at the junction of the main Arakawa River (foreground of the photo) and the tributary Sumida River. It was built in 1924 (Taisho 13) under the guidance of Sakano Yutaka, who worked on the construction of the Panama Canal. In 1982 (Showa 57), a new water gate was completed downstream and this water gate ceased its role, but it is still affectionately known as the "Red Water Gate." Kita-ku, Tokyo ©Yutaka Sakano ">
