Footwear worn under straw sandals or rubber boots for walking or working on snow or in marshes. To prevent feet from sinking into the snow, wooden boards or bamboo are used to make rings or frames, and ropes are attached to tie the sandals. Some are woven like blinds. Single-wheeled bamboo rings were used for treading and clearing snow on flat ground, while double-wheeled ones with claws were used to prevent slipping when hunting on hard ice and snow. Kane kanjiki with iron anti-slip pads were made in the Edo period and were used on frozen snowy roads in early spring. There is also a type of rice-field geta called kanjiki, which is worn during rice harvesting in deep fields. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
