A city in the Stavropol region of the North Caucasus in southwestern Russia. It is located about 140 km southeast of Stavropol, at the northern foot of the central-western Greater Caucasus Mountains, overlooking the Podkmok River, a tributary of the Kuma River. It is the center of the mineral springs of the North Caucasus, and is known as a resort with many sanatoriums, therapeutic hot springs, hospitals, and tourist facilities. There are historical sites and a museum related to the Russian poet Lermontov, who was killed in a duel here in 1841. A branch line from the main railway line connecting Rostov-on-Don and Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, runs through the city, as well as a highway. There is also an airport.
