Born: Tenbun 5 (1536). March 10, Kyoto [Died] May 19, 1565. 13th Shogun of the Kyoto Muromachi Shogunate (in office 1546-65). Son of Yoshiharu. Mother was the daughter of Konoe Hisamichi. Childhood name was Kikudo. Initially named Yoshito. Changed his name to Yoshiteru on February 12, 1554. In the 15th year of the same year, he became Left Horse Captain with Junior Fifth Rank, and shortly after succeeding his father Yoshiharu as Seii Taishogun, he was promoted to Junior Fourth Rank, and on February 17 the following year, he became Councillor Left Middle Captain. In the same year, in the conflict between Hosokawa Harumoto and Hatakeyama Masakuni, he sided with Hatakeyama, and the Hosokawa forces attacked Kitashirakawa Castle in the north of Kyoto. He fled to Sakamoto in Omi with his father. Later, he made peace with Harumoto, and returned to Kyoto in June of the 17th year of the same year. However, in the following year, 1805, Harumoto fought in Settsu with his vassal Miyoshi Nagayoshi and was defeated, so Yoshiharu and his son moved back to Sakamoto with Harumoto. On May 4, 1806, Yoshiharu died of illness and Yoshiteru succeeded him as head of the family. In 1817, due to the Miyoshi clan's invasion of Omi, they moved from Sakamoto to Kutsuki in Takashima County, further north in the mountains, but in 1818, a peace treaty was made with the Miyoshi clan, and Harumoto fled from Katata and Yoshiteru returned to Kyoto. In July of the following year, 1822, when Nagayoshi invaded Kyoto, they fled from Sugizaka in Yamashiro to Ryuga in Omi, and Kyoto came under Nagayoshi's control, so Yoshiteru's whereabouts became unknown. In the first year of the Eiroku era (58), Yoshiteru and Harumoto came to Ryugasaki from Kutsuki, and with the help of Rokkaku Yoshikata of Omi, they moved their camp to Sakamoto, and advanced westward, fighting against the Miyoshi forces in Kyoto, but in November a peace agreement was reached and they entered the capital. In the seventh year of the Eiroku era (64), Nagayoshi died, and the following year his successor, Yoshitsugu, and his vassal Matsunaga Hisahide, who had wielded sovereignty, suddenly attacked his residence in Kyoto, and Yoshiteru committed suicide.
