1879‐1951 German legal historian. Born in Klagenfurt, Austria. After graduating from the University of Graz, he went to the University of Leipzig to study under Ludwig Mitteis, whose legal papyrus studies opened up new horizons in the study of Roman law. He taught at universities in Prague, Leipzig, Berlin, and other places. As well as being a leading authority on Roman law, he also made groundbreaking achievements in the study of ancient Oriental laws, particularly pioneering the previously unexplored field of cuneiform law. His research was supported by a strong interest in past modes of legal thinking, and his methodology was characterized by comparative legal history.
