[History of incubators]
It has long been known that premature babies have immature thermoregulatory functions and that they will have difficulty surviving if care is not taken to keep them warm. As a result, devices were created to keep babies warm by running warm water between double walls, but the prototype of the modern incubator was invented in 1880 by French obstetrician Etienne S. Tarnier (1828-97). Incubators have been used in Japan since the Taisho period.
