Shared ride - Ainori

Japanese: 合乗り - あいのり
Shared ride - Ainori

...Rickshaws became popular, and in February 1872, there were 11,040 rickshaws in Tokyo, including 88 private rickshaws for the nobility and government officials. By 1876, the number had doubled to 24,470, but more than half of them were "shared rides," in which a geisha and a customer were often seen riding together with a blanket draped over their laps. A song once became popular: "We ride together, with our hoods on, our cheeks pressed against each other, and we're all smitten." Around 1889, rubber wheels began to be used on private rickshaws instead of the wooden wheels used up until that time, and by 1909 this had spread rapidly, and by 1912, rickshaws with pneumatic tires had appeared.
