Red chestnut - Red chestnut

A snake of the order Squamata, family Colubridae, class Reptilia. A non-venomous snake with a vivid reddish-red color. It is collected at altitudes of 2000 meters in Honshu and at low altitudes in Hokkaido, but the number of individuals is small. It is distinguished from the E. conspicillata by the lack of keels on its body scales and the lack of black markings on its abdominal plate.

爬虫(はちゅう)綱有鱗(ゆうりん)目ナミヘビ科のヘビ。鮮やかな赤紅色をした無毒ヘビ。本州では2000メートル級の高地、北海道では低地で採集されるが、個体数は少ない。体鱗にキール(隆条)がなく、腹板に黒い斑紋(はんもん)を欠く点でジムグリE. conspicillataと区別される。
