A language belonging to the Celtic branch of the Indo-European language family. Along with Scottish Gaelic, it is part of the Goidelic group. Its earliest form can be seen to some extent in inscriptions in Ogham script. The Roman alphabet was brought to Ireland in the 5th century, and all subsequent documents have been written in Roman script. Ancient Irish retains a complex verb conjugation system. In the early modern period, it gradually fell into decline due to the influence of English, but it is currently being taught and promoted as an official language in the Republic of Ireland. Today, it is reported that there are approximately one million speakers, of which approximately 30,000 are thought to have Irish as their first mother tongue.
