This is the process of separating solid particles from liquid by using the so-called settling phenomenon, in which solid particles with a specific gravity greater than that of the liquid are dispersed in a fluid and the particles gradually fall due to the action of gravity. Settling separation using centrifugal force fields is also widely used (→ Centrifugal separator). The purposes of settling separation are broadly divided into classification, sedimentation concentration, and clarification. Settling tanks are commonly used as equipment for settling separation.

液体の比重より大きい比重の固体粒子が流体中に分散しているとき，重力の作用によって粒子が次第に落下していくいわゆる沈降現象を利用して，液体と固体粒子を分離する操作をいう。重力のみでなくて遠心力場での沈降分離も広く利用されている (→遠心分離機 ) 。沈降分離の目的は分級，沈殿濃縮，清澄に大別される。一般に沈降分離を行う装置に沈降槽 (沈降タンク) settling tankがある。
