Gothic revival

Japanese: ゴシック･リバイバル（英語表記）Gothic revival

This refers to a movement to revive medieval Gothic decoration and architectural forms. It arose mainly in England, based in part on the 18th-century landscape garden fad, the picturesque aesthetic, and reached its height in the 19th century, also flourishing in continental Europe and America. Admiration of the Middle Ages is deeply rooted in England, and in the mid-18th century, politician H. Walpole built his own house, Strawberry Hill, in the Gothic style, pioneering this movement. Until the 19th century, the Gothic style was used in the spirit of Romanticism, which glorified ruins, but when Ruskin praised Gothic as the embodiment of medieval ethical values, the momentum for the Gothic revival extended to the arts in general, particularly architecture.

中世ゴシック様式の装飾や建築形態を復興しようとする動きをいう。18世紀の風景式庭園の流行，ピクチュアレスクの美学をひとつの基盤としてイギリスを中心に発生し，19世紀に最盛期を迎え，ヨーロッパ大陸，アメリカにも盛行を見た。中世に対する賛美の念はイギリスに根強く存在し，18世紀中葉には政治家H.ウォルポールが自邸ストローベリー･ヒルをゴシック様式で建築し，この機運の先駆となった。19世紀に入るまで，ゴシック様式は廃墟を賛美するロマン主義の気風のもとで用いられていたが，ラスキンがゴシックを中世の倫理的な価値観の体現と称揚するにいたって，ゴシック復興の機運は建築を中心とする芸術一般に及んだ。
