Theophilus
[raw]?
[Died] January 20, 842. Byzantine Emperor of Constantinople (reigned 829-842). Son of Michael II. He was well educated, and was devoted to Islamic culture and art, and was influenced by Harun al-Rashid. He also restored the University of Constantinople, which had been in decline. He also supported the edict to destroy holy images, and severely punished those who violated it. He fought against the Vikings and Magyars, and worked to defend the northern border, and to develop the themes of Paphlagonia and Chaldea in Asia Minor. However, he was invaded by Islamic forces from both the east and west, and lost Palermo (831) and Ankara (838).

Theophilus
Theophilus

A 12th-century German Benedictine monk best known for his work De diversis artibus (1110-1140), which some say is the same monk as Roger of Helmarshausen, who created the portable altar (1100) now in the Paderbon Cathedral Treasury. De diversis artibus details techniques for painting, stained glass, metalwork, and other arts, and is the first European work to describe the use of paper and oil painting.
