Antonio Fogazzaro

Antonio Fogazzaro

Italian author. Born and raised in Vicenza in a religious and patriotic family. From a Catholic perspective, he consistently pursued the relationship between the inner self of humans and society. He denounced the corruption within Catholicism through positivism, Darwin's theory of evolution, and socialism. He gained fame through his debut novel, Marombra (1881), Daniele Cortis (1885), and his masterpiece, The Little Old World (1895). This is a story of love between a husband and wife in a time of crisis for the bourgeoisie, set against the backdrop of the Risorgimento (national unification). The central issue of this work, faith, is directly presented in the sequel, The Saints (1905), which was banned by the Vatican due to its proposals for church reform. He also gave a lecture on "The Future of the Italian Novel," which has sparked contemporary interest in what he saw as an Italian intellectual at the end of the 19th century in a country that was firmly rooted in Catholicism, and as a writer who embodied a unique decadence, at the polar opposite of the "small old" world.
