...Nicholas, outraged, sent troops to Moldova and Wallachia in July 1853, which had been granted autonomy under the Sultan's suzerainty, while Turkey, supported by Britain and France, declared war on Russia in October of the same year. The initial war went in Russia's favor, and the Russian Black Sea fleet, commanded by Pavel Stepanovich Nakhimov (1802-1855), won a major victory over the Turkish fleet in the Battle of Sinope Bay in November 1853. However, fearing Turkey's surrender, Britain and France sent fleets to the Black Sea and declared war in March 1854, reversing the balance of power.
