A group of novels that emerged in the second half of the 18th century in England, mainly set against the backdrop of Gothic buildings, dealing with supernatural horrors, and selling a sense of horror. It began with H. Walpole's The Castle of Otranto (1764), passed through W. Beckford and others, and at its peak produced works by A. Radcliffe, M. G. Lewis, and W. Godwin, as well as C. R. Maturin and the American C. B. Brown. Today, it has expanded even further, and there is a strong tendency to think of it as a novel genre. In this case, it can also include works by modern authors such as Poe, the Bronte sisters, Hawthorne, W. Collins, and R. L. Stevenson, as well as W. Faulkner and T. Capote.
