The current dynasty of Morocco. Since 1631. Also called the Filālī (meaning people from Tāfīlālt) dynasty or the Filāli dynasty. The ancestors of the royal family were an Arab family that came to the Tafilalt region in southern Morocco from the Arabian Peninsula at the end of the 13th century, and they claim to be Sharifs (meaning people of noble blood) descended from Hassan, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. Based on the development of saint worship and the rise of xenophobic jihad (holy war) consciousness against Portugal and Spain, the state was founded in Tafilalt (1631) with Muhammad al-Sharif as sultan, and in 1640, Muhammad bin Muhammad of the Alawite family was recognized as king of the surrounding area.
