1179‐1241 Icelandic poet and historian. Born the son of chieftain Sturla, he was adopted by Jón Loptsson and raised in Odde, a centre of learning. At the age of 20 he married the daughter of a wealthy man and moved to Borg, where he gradually gained fame as a historian, lawyer and poet, and demonstrated his skill as a politician. In 1218 he visited Norway and became acquainted with King Haakon IV and Duke Skrí, which prompted him to write a history of the dynasty. He was active as a poet and legal herald, but was caught up in a political struggle involving the Norwegian king's ambitions for Iceland and was killed by an assassin.
