A city in central eastern Shizuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1966. It is centered on the former Fuji City district, which was incorporated in 1954 in the Fuji River delta, and the former Yoshiwara City district. The northern part of the city is at the foot of Mt. Fuji, and the southern part faces Suruga Bay and has Tagonoura. The former Fuji City district, where the Tokaido Main Line runs and where the Minobu Line branches off, was a grain-producing area known as Kashima Gosenkoku in the early modern period, but since the Meiji period, it has developed into one of the leading paper-making cities in the country, taking advantage of its important transportation location and the abundant springs of Mt. Fuji. Industries such as electrical equipment, paper-making machinery, chemical products, and transportation equipment are also thriving, and the city's manufactured goods shipment value was 1.2572 trillion yen (2003), ranking fourth in the prefecture, of which the paper and pulp industries account for nearly 40%. In recent years, pollution from factory wastewater and soot has become significant. Mandarin oranges and vegetables are grown in the surrounding area, and greenhouse horticulture is also popular. The Tokaido Shinkansen, Tomei and Shin-Tomei Expressways run through the city, and the Gakunan Railway connects the city. 静岡県中東部の市。1966年市制。富士川三角州にある1954年市制の旧富士市地区と，旧吉原市地区が中心。北部は富士山麓で，南は駿河湾に面し田子ノ浦がある。東海道本線が通じ，身延線が分岐する旧富士市地区は近世，加島五千石と呼ばれた穀倉地であったが，明治以後交通要地，富士山の豊富な湧泉を利用して全国有数の製紙工業都市として発展。電機器具，製紙機械，化学製品，輸送用機器などの工業も盛んで，１兆2572億円（2003）の製造品出荷額を上げ，県内では４位，そのうち製紙・パルプ工業で４割近くを占める。近年工場排水とばい煙による公害が著しい。周辺ではミカン，野菜などを栽培し，施設園芸も盛ん。東海道新幹線，東名および新東名高速道路が通じ，岳南鉄道が市内を結ぶ。2008年11月庵原郡富士川町を編入。244.95km²。25万4027人（2010）。
