Around 1385 - 1464 Metropolitan of Moscow. Greek. Humanist who promoted union with the Church of Rome in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Also known as Isidore. Active as a unionist at the Council of Ferrara and Florence, he proclaimed the union of the Russian Church with the Church of Rome in Moscow in 1441. However, he was imprisoned and deposed by Grand Prince Vasily II of Moscow, who opposed the union. He escaped and worked to unite the Orthodox Church in Poland, and later served as papal nuncio to Constantinople, which was on the verge of falling.
