Japanese: 洗張り - あらいはり

An old method of washing Japanese clothing. After washing, the fabric is starched and stretched or boarded before being dried. It is also called tokiarai (unraveling) because it involves the step of unraveling beforehand. Nowadays, it is common to omit the stretching and boarding steps and simply finish the dried fabric with a hot water bath. For Japanese clothing to be washed and stretched, the stitches are unraveled in the reverse order to when it was made, and after removing any lint or dirt, the cut edges are sewn back together to return it to its roll of fabric state. This is called hanui (edge stitching). If boarding is used, no edge stitching is done.

古くからの和服専門の洗濯方法。洗ったのちのりをつけて伸子張り（しんしばり）や板張りを行って乾燥させる。事前に解く作業を伴うため，解洗い（ときあらい）ともいう。現在では伸子張りや板張りを略して，干した布を湯のし仕上げにすることが多い。洗張りする和服は仕立てのときと反対の順序で縫目を解き，糸屑やごみを払ったのち裁目を縫いつなげて反物の状態に戻す。これを端縫（はぬい）という。板張りの場合には，端縫はしない。
