A spiritual being worshipped by the indigenous Andean peoples (Quechua, Aymara, etc.). Translated as "Earth, Mother." Possessing a feminine nature, she is sometimes identified with the Virgin Mary. Worshipped as a force related to fertility and reproduction of crops and livestock, she receives offerings of alcohol, coca leaves, spices, tallow, and other materials at certain times throughout the year. Offerings are particularly important in August, when this is "the time when the earth comes back to life." If she is not "nourished" through offerings, Pachamama's powers can be destructive to humans. [Tomoeda Hiroyasu] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
