Koko Nuur (Lake)

Japanese: ココ･ノール[湖]（英語表記）Koko nuur

Mongolian name for Lake Qinghai in China's Qinghai Province. It means blue lake. Area 4635m2. China's largest saltwater lake. A sunken lake surrounded by Mount Datong, Mount Ri and Mount Yue. During the Han dynasty it was called the West Sea, Xianshui, and in the Northern Wei dynasty it was called Qinghai. The Shuijingzhu notes that the water is blue-green and never dries up or overflows in either winter or summer. The surrounding area has risen, and the lake surface has shrunk for about 10,000 years, forming several lake ridges. Mount Kaishin and Torishima are dotted throughout the lake. It is known as a treasure trove of fish, and fishing is thriving here. [Komai Shoichi]

中国青海省にある青海湖のモンゴル語の呼称。青色の湖の意。面積4635m2。中国最大の塩水湖。大通山，日月山などに囲まれた陥没湖。漢代には西海，鮮水，北魏になり青海とよばれた。《水経注》に水色は青緑で冬夏ともにかれず溢れずとある。周囲が隆起し，1万年ほど前から湖面が縮小，数条の湖浜堤（こひんてい）が形成されている。湖中には海心山や鳥島などが点在する。魚の宝庫とよばれ漁業が盛んである。【駒井正一】
