827‐898 A monk from the late Silla period in Korea. His common surname was Kim. He was from Yeongam, Jeolla Province, and is said to be a descendant of King Muyeol. He became a monk at the age of 15, later studying under the great master Hyecheol, and received the ordination at Chondosa Temple at the age of 23. After further training, he lived at Okryongsa Temple in Hyangyang County, and served as the teacher of King Heonkang for a time, but he spent the rest of his life there. He was well versed in the theory of feng shui, and pointed out the excellent geography of Kaesong, and is said to have predicted the appearance of King Taejo of Goryeo and the founding of the state. His theory was widely circulated during the Goryeo period and had a great political influence. He was highly revered by the Goryeo dynasty, and was posthumously awarded titles such as Great Zen Master, King's Master, and Seongakkukokushi.
