A town in Kusu County in western Oita Prefecture. The Kusu Basin is in the center, and the Kyudai Main Line and National Route 210 pass through it. Rice and vegetables are cultivated, and cattle raising is popular on the plateau. The southern part of the town is home to the Kuju Mountains and Handa Plateau, which are part of Aso-Kuju National Park, and is connected to the Kyushu Transverse Highway. There is a geothermal power plant. Kokonoe Onsen is also home to the town. In 2005, the Kuju Bogatsuru-Tadewara Marshland was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland. In October 2006, the Kokonoe "Yume" Suspension Bridge, a large pedestrian-only suspension bridge, was completed over the Naruko River Valley. 271.37 km2 . Population: 10,421 (2010).
